Book Review: diyMFA: Write with Focus, Read with Purpose, Build your Community
Updated: Apr 7, 2020
This book is interactive, engaging and each chapter entices you to keep reading - even into the wee hours of the morning.
If you've ever thought about going back to university and studying creative writing - don't. At least, not until you've read diyMFA which stands for do-it-yourself Masters in Fine Arts - it outlines the best parts of a masters degree without the expense. The book itself is loaded with invaluable advice, tools and a framework for developing your writing career.
Favourite quote from the book:
“The sooner you know something isn't working, the sooner you can eliminate that option and find another that works. Fail fast and fail often so you can establish a creative process that moves you closer to success.”
Gabriela Pereira, author of diyMFA
The title gives the best clue as to how the framework is built - through writing, reading and building your community. They are simple concepts on the surface but Gabriela Pereira discusses the 'science' behind the framework and breaks it down into insightful, thematic chapters.
This book is in my top 5 writing reference books that will live on my desk and be referred to on a daily basis.
